Let me tell you about this mysterious, but intriguing concept.
3 Days
Your new pet doesn’t understand the language, doesn’t know the environment and has never met the locals until today. If you were dropped into a foreign land, what might you do? Probably stay away from all the people, as much as possible, take it slow, be cautious and slowly test out your surroundings, right?
Well, that is what your new pet is most likely going to do.
Remember, your new forever pet wants to be loved, safe, and well cared for…for forever but right now, he/she doesn’t know what to think and is scared.
Be patient, very patient. Let your dog or cat take its time. Check out the place, see what the new environment is like. Give him/her time to adjust. On average, it takes 3 full days for your new pet to get a little comfortable in their new home.
3 Weeks
Well, a few days have passed and your new pet is a little more secure. He/she is starting to learn the ropes, venturing out a bit, testing their boundaries a bit, maybe getting under foot…a lot. As with children, you have to be patient and understanding.
Over the course of roughly 3 weeks, your new pet will become much more comfortable, will have a better relationship with other animals in the house and begin to start feeling at home in their forever home.
3 Months
Once you hit the 3 month mark, your pet should be happy, relaxed, feeling good! He/she has been here a while, understands (usually… 🙂 ) the rules of the house and knows you will care for, protect, nuture and love them forever.
Animals, like humans, have distinct personalities, see the world in their own way and want to be accepted and loved just like you.
Treat them like the member of the family they are. Care for them, play with them and love them.
